Injured Jockeys Fund’s £6m rehab centre in Newmarket is now open - News - MLM

Collin Perllman and Scott Calver from the Building Services team attended the opening ceremony for Peter O’Sullevan House, the Injured Jockeys Fund’s (IJF) new rehabilitation and fitness centre on 12 October.

The event was opened by IJF President and former jockey, Sir Anthony McCoy. Among the guests were many famous faces from the horse racing world including Lester Piggott, Ryan Moore, Frankie Dettori, William Buick, Ted Durcan, Johnny Murtagh, Luke Morris and Hayley Turner.

The centre is named after the late, great horse racing commentator, Peter O’Sullevan who was involved in some of the earliest television commentaries of the sport dating back to the 1940s. The building is equipped with state-of-the art spaces, including physiotherapy treatment rooms, a comprehensive gym, a hydrotherapy pool and training classrooms for The British Racing School.

MLM were the lead designer on this £6m project, offering the entire Building Services package from concept through to completion and handover, working alongside R G Carter and Townscape Architects. MLM also provided building control services.

The building was designed using renewable energy in the form of solar panels for the hot water and electricity to keep running costs to a minimum. The low carbon air source heat pumps were installed to provide ventilation and air conditioning throughout the building – the gym, in particular, was designed to run at a consistent 18°C.

A special addition to the centre is the horse shoe statues that were crafted entirely from horse shoes that had been donated by the horsing community.

Collin Perllman, project lead comments:

“It was an honour to be part of this event with so many celebrities from the racing world present. Usually we don’t get to see our work in operation following completion. Seeing our design, which started as a mere sketch on a beer mat by myself and Scott, come to fruition and fully operating was really rewarding. We received very positive reviews from the staff and racing community.

“It was a privilege to be a part of such a rewarding project that will be a definite asset and landmark for the racing community. It was great to be a part of such a great project team who collaborated well and delivered a great result.”
