MLM Foundation funding a pilot project for Straight Talking Peer Education

Straight Talking Peer Education - News - MLM

The third pilot project being funded by MLM Foundation is for Straight Talking Peer Education (STPE), a charity who work across London to support disadvantaged young parents and help get them back into education and employment.

Established in 1998, STPE help reduce the abusive exploitation of young people and the high rates of teenage pregnancy in the UK. They do this by helping young parents develop life skills and improve the opportunities available to them.

Funding was requested to recruit, train and employ eight teenage parents to deliver 25 courses in schools across Hillingdon, Ealing and Hounslow.

These teenage parents will undergo an initial 30 hours training during which they will learn the peer education curriculum, presentation skills, observe course delivery and gain a deeper understanding of employment policies and procedures.

They will then deliver the courses to classrooms of up to 30 children in local secondary schools. The topics which the young parents will cover in the classroom are: understanding the issues of sexting, recognising the signs of child exploitation and learning about the implications of teenage pregnancy.

Pupils will be put in real life scenarios to explore the practicalities and responsibilities of parenthood, the emotional and physical issues of pregnancy and the implications of being reliant on the State for housing and financial needs.

Participants will be supported beyond the end of the project through help with CVs, progression along STPE’s four-stage programme and job hunting support.

STPE comments:

“We are extremely grateful for the grant and excited to be delivering our courses. With the funding provided by MLM Foundation we will be able to employ young parents to help expand their career and personal development, whilst educating and preventing teenage pregnancy in schools.”
