Iwade Brook flows through Perisimmon’s Coleshall Farm Development splitting the development into two land parcels. The local planning authority required a stream crossing be constructed enabling the development’s main distributor road from the northern parcel access to the major highway network to the south relieving traffic flows from the village centre. Iwade brook is classified as a main river by the Environment Agency and they stipulated a requirement for a clear span structure that spanned the extents of a 1 in 100 year flood flows. This produced a need for a 7.5m clear span structure.

With the client’s preference to maximise the use of off-site manufactured PC units, a single span arch bridge solution was developed based on Macrete’s Flexi-arch system.

MLM as lead designers worked closely with Macrete to produce a solution comprising of a 7.55m span flexi-arch superstructure, pre-cast concrete spandrel wall panels, pre-cast concrete wing wall units, with a piled RC foundation sub-structure and masonry parapet walls.

MLM obtained technical approval for the structure from Kent County Council, the local Highway Authority that would adopt and maintain it in the future, and also provided on-site supervision during the construction period.
