Felixstowe Sewage Treatment Works was constructed in two stages in the interests of providing the best possible improvement to the surrounding beaches and environment in the shortest possible time.
By the start of the 1994 bathing season Biwater International had completed construction and commissioning of the first stage preliminary works contract, consisting of the provision of a new elevated inlet works offering screening removal and handling, grit removal and storm separation facilities which provided the immediate improvements required by the local community.
Stage Two Works – Providing primary and secondary treatment on the site were commenced in September 1995. Site investigations for the inlet works and subsequent expansion of those investigations made ground and soft clays overlying sands and gravels which resulted in the whole works, including manhole chambers and stair plinths, being piled to a depth of 20m.
