The project entails the construction of a new extension onto the existing Five Acre Wood School in Maidstone, Kent. The site currently includes an existing two storey building which is cross shaped. The proposed construction involves the addition of a two storey wing centrally off the main spine of the building. The new wing will consist of double aspect teaching rooms with central informal open plan learning areas at each floor. General circulation from the new wing will be provided via the central corridors that link to the existing staircase on the existing main building with a new external staircase at the opposite end of the wing.

In accordance with BS 9999, all doors and windows positioned adjacent to external stairs should be provided with 30 minutes fire resisting construction. With the new external stair serving the extension, it was not proposed to fire rate the windows or doors positioned adjacent to the external stair. A fire engineered solution was applied. To demonstrate safe evacuation, it was proposed to carry out evacuation analysis based on the Required Safe Egress Time (RSET) study using PD 7974 Part 6. The Available Safe Egress Time (ASET) was coupled with Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). The fire engineered approach showed there are tenable conditions during means of escape phase.
