MLM were appointed for a wide ranging inspection and reporting into the condition of many of the buildings and quay structures at Harwich International Port. There were various problems found affecting the suspended quays that led to a wide range of further investigation assessment and testing.

On the East Quay intensive investigations were made to determine the load carrying capacity of a ‘filler-joist’ area of quay, which resulted in load testing part of the structure to prove its strength and a programme of repairs.

The repair scheme for the strengthening work that resulted from this was procured in a manner to suit the clients requirements for flexible working hours on the quay. MLM’s cost benefit analysis suggested the most economic scheme was for the client to purchase the repair materials and equipment directly and bring in the labour on a day rate basis.
