MLM provided Civil & Structural Engineering, Building Services Design and Environmental Consultancy for this 200 place Autistic Spectrum Disorder school in Colchester, Essex which provides education and support services for pupils aged 5 to 16 years old.

The project involved the demolition of the existing school building and the erection of a new two storey building. The scheme follows key principles in the design of effective environments for pupils with autism and makes full use of the limited space available by providing play space on the roof of some single storey parts of the building.

Further consideration was given to the logistics of car parking along with school bus drop off, this culminated with the inclusion of a projecting first floor with undercroft parking.

Natural light and ventilation was an integral part of the brief and large windows in every room were included in the design to ensure the floor space was flooded with natural light. Classrooms and the main hall incorporate passive ventilation with CO2 sensors to optimise the internal learning environment.
