Tilbury Docks floating pontoon berth underwent a major upgrade comprising the construction of new berthing and mooring facilities. The scheme intention was to accommodate larger vessels than previously for the import of vehicles weighing up to 70 tonnes. The loading ramp from the ship, combined with the wheel loads from the vehicles as they disembarked from the vessel imposed exceptionally high loads on the pontoons, causing individual pontoons in this location to float lower and thus induce high stresses in the longitudinal steel keelsons.

MLM carried out Finite Element Analysis of the pontoons and keelsons to analyse the stresses in the various elements and designed strengthening works in conjunction with setting operating parameters on the numbers of vehicles in use at any one time.
