Passivhaus Standard

This project involved the construction of a new two storey family home in Windsor. Addressing the Green Belt status by measures including low impact Passivhaus design enabled consent to be gained for a building 80% larger than the existing development. The house was design using the Passivhaus planning package software (PHPP) and at a planning appeal presented as a zero carbon dwelling.

At appeal, the scheme was granted approval with the following inspectorate’s commentary:

“As the move towards low and zero-carbon development is supported and promoted in PPS1: Delivering Sustainable Development and its recently published Supplementary, Planning and Climate Change, I consider that these points lend weight to the appellant’s case.”

The spatial requirements of the architectural design resulted in a steel frame being required with the masonry envelope. Integrating a steel frame into the building while avoiding significant thermal bridging required Fluid to work closely with Bere Associates to meet the Passivhaus criteria.
