The Wilderness Redevelopment project was the creation of two schools, positioned carefully together with each other, on the same site in Wilderness, Sevenoaks. Complementing each other in their form – and creating a cohesive educational campus – the Trinity Free School and the Weald of Kent Grammar Annexe are both designs developed from the Education Funding Agency’s Finger Block – with each building being a unique adaptation, responding to the site’s requirements and the planned curriculum of the school.

The Grammar school used the existing sports hall as part of the new build extension. So the Building Control challenges related around Consequential Improvements and producing a new fire strategy which encompassed the existing sports hall. In conjunction with the Fire Engineer we maximised the occupancy of the building given the stair widths provided through the use of BS9999 which also allowed travel distances over and above those in Approved Document B to ensure the design of the school was workable. Site wide Fire Brigade access was also a challenge between the 2 schools and with the adoption of a dry risers and adjusting some of the landscaping this was overcome.

We also worked with the design team to ensure single sided ventilation was a workable solution for the completed design.
