MLM carried out the detailed design of the structural and building services engineering on the innovative wildfowl and wetlands visitors centre and footbridge near Welney.

The project has received two prestigious awards – civic trusts biodiversity sustainability award and the sustainability award from the RICS. The building was also runner-up for the building of the year for the East of England awards. The design comprised of a timber frame construction which offered a sustainable and durable solution which was integrated into the beautiful and striking fenland landscape.

The design was simple, bright and friendly utilising sustainable Siberian Larch timber products, and energy efficient engineering services, which comprised of a ground source heat pump to supply energy efficient heat to underfloor heating and domestic hot water. Photovoltaic cells were used to illuminate signage. A rainwater recycling system was provided to collect rainfall for the flushing of toilets. Nearby a large reed bed was provided to cleanse the building’s waste water. The project achieved a very good BREEAM rating.
